Impact injury to the knee

Question:

Impact injury to the knee

Any help out there..getting desperate.
I sustained an impact injury to my knee, coming off my pushbike . I have since had extensive physio and ultimately an MRI scan through the NHS. The consultant informed me that my articular cartilage had most probably become softened from the impact, but that it wasn`t something he considered could be operated on, as there was no obvious damage to the knee itself. He also said that continuing to cycle wouldn`t neccessarily cause any further damage, but was more a case of managing the discomfort caused from that activity.
Having had the best part of a year out of cycling ( the time from just after the accident and an MRI), with plenty of physio, I very gently began to cycle again after my consultation. 7 months of v.light cycling later and my knee is worse than ever..no swelling as yet, but any ride longer than 10 miles or so causing stiffness and pain below and to the inside of the kneecap and a deep aching from within the kneecap itself, with occasional pins and needles in my toes.
Any advice on what my next course of action should be? I`m seeing my GP next week and am considering trying to get a referral for an arthroscopy..although the consultants findings from the MRI may make this difficult. It`s obviously not a severe injury, which I think is half the problem..If I avoided cycling altogether and spent more time loafing I`d probably be fine. Unfortunately, getting out on my bike is the thing that keeps me sane.
