Best way to rehab a shoulder that has been dislocated

Question: Best way to rehab a shoulder that has been dislocated

Hello, any ideas of how to rehab an old injury (partial separation dislocation) that originally happened 30 years ago? It has happened 3 more times with the last being 2002. 8 months ago (2011) he caught a falling ink bucket about 80 lbs and "wrenched" it. Since then when lifting weights and when bench pressing his left arm loses feeling in the shoulder and runs down the arm ending in his pinky and ring finger going numb. Also, when doing a sitting machine-type verticle chest press if stopping the bar at 90 degrees he can't use his shoulder to push but has to go back to about 100-105 degrees to get the strength to push. He loses feeling in shoulder from about 70-80 degrees. No, he has not seen a doctor since he dislocated it 17 years ago (MRI no damage noted). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:

You'd need to have someone have look to properly assess and diagnose this as it sounds like there could also be some c spine impingement? Fundamentally, this guy should certainly not be benchpressing - (sounds like there will not be much space in there anyway). Work on strengthening the rotator cuffs -internal and external, scapula stabilisation and postural re-education. Focus on close chained exercises as opposed to open chain "machines" that falsely stabilise for him! Hope this helps.

Thanks so much!
