How do I deal with severe pain to buttocks and outer thighs pain on walking and running downhill

Question: How do I deal with severe pain to buttocks and outer thighs pain on walking and running downhill

I am a female runner who has completed a number of marathons, half marathons and other shorter distance runs. I train regularly and have developed severe pain in both legs around my outer thighs and lower buttocks. This pain only occurs when I walk or run down hill. The top of my left leg (outer thigh} feels'knotted'around the hip area and is very sore when subjected to any pressure. It has been suggested that this may be a Bursitis. I think however that this is a seperate issue from the pain in my buttocks and outer thighs. How or where can I find really sound medical advice?

Answer:

For starts you need to see a physio.

What you're describing is typical of a tight ITB/Glut med. You may have a large Q angle/deconditioned/poor lead up training.

You need to rest from aggravating activity, find some gluteal stretches and ITB stretches on the internet and go see a physio to teach you to strengthen your hips and return you back to function (if determined reasonable).
