How long does it take to recover from a torn meniscus surgery?

Question: How long does it take to recover from a torn meniscus surgery?

I had a knee operation in January 2009 and I still experience some days stiffness and pain in the knee especially if I walk on hard surfaces like titled floors or if I go up several flights of stairs. My knee often fills up with fluid too. I had physiotherapy for about 12 weeks and tried to get back to my normal fitness regime - running, cycling and boxing. I am anxious to start kickboxing again which I have been doing for 4 years but it looks like I won't be doing that until the end of the year at this rate.

Answer:

I have had medial menisectomies in both knees. About 2/3 removed in one and 1/3 in the other.

I was back on the yoga floor after 7 days with both. I practice yoga about 5-6 days a week and after about 3 months I was back to normal with complete range of motion. I have no pain at all.

If you are running or contemplating kickboxing, I reckon you're nuts. Both are high impact on the knee. One thing i am trying to avoid now are knee replacements - the usual scenario for those who persisit with impact exercise after menisectomies.

Good luck.
