how long does a scaphoid fracture take to heal? (nondisplaced)

Question: how long does a scaphoid fracture take to heal? (nondisplaced)

i fell in dance less than a week ago and 2 days later found out i had fractured my scaphoid. i am still in a lot of pain though i am in a cast that covers my thumb and is short arm. i go back to the doctor in 4 weeks. please give suggestions on how i can help this heal although i am in a cast and an estimate of how long it takes to heal and what is done after the cast is removed.

Answer:

CAST WILL STAY FOR APPROXIMATELY 6 TO 8 WEEKS DEPENDING ON AN INDIVIDUAL PERSON AND THE AGE.

AFTER THE CAST IS REMOVE IT WILL REQUIRE GENTLE MASSAGE FROM THE HAND TOWARDS THE ARM AND SHOULDER FOR PROPER BLOOD CIRCULATION WITH GENTLE ROM (RANGE OF MOTION) FOR FLEXIBILITY, WHICH IS ESSENTIAL FOR HEALING.

DO NOT RUSH INTO THE STRENGHTING EXERCISES BEFORE THE FULL ROM IS ACHIEVED AND THE PAIN HAS SUBSIDED, IT COULD CAUSE MORE DAMAGE.

Answer:

I have the same injury and just got my cast off today after 8 weeks. I was hoping that I would be 100% after they cut the thing off but to no avail. The xray shows a successful union however I have no range of motion whatsoever and it HURTS like nobody's business.

They gave me a thumb spica splint to wear for two weeks and then I have to go back to the Orthopede for a follow up. I am sure the ligaments and tendons are a mess which is causing the stiffness, pain, swelling, and lack of ROM.

I was told 8 weeks is the minimum and some take up to 16 weeks in a cast. Once that is off, assuming a successful union of the bone, it can take weeks or months before full ROM and strength are returned to normal. In some cases depending on the individual and where the fracture was located, 100% recovery is not obtainable.

Hope for a good Orthopede and a good physical therapist!! Good luck and post how you are progressing!
