I need help with diagnois of knee pain area.

Question: I need help with diagnois of knee pain area.

I ran my first 5K race recently. Next day left knee area started hurting. The pain is under knee cap on the front inside part of my leg. I iced a few times, otherwise have been taking ibprophen. Did recently been wearing a knee band not sure if that is helping. Went to try and run again, its been a week and half, and instant pain/pressure in that area.
What should I do?

Answer:

From the description, and without further information, it is hard to tell, but I would suspect a case of bursitis (inflammation of the fluid sack in the joint).

I would take ibuprofen (or other NSAIDs) and rest for a few days.
If symptoms persist after 72 hours or so, get it checked out by a professional, who can give you a firm diagnosis and treatment plan.

Check out the description of bursitis on NHS Choices for more information.

I practice osteopathy and so my approach might be different. Have you had any recent impacts too your knee cap?some times that will lead to sticking of layers of tissues which can be released. You may have tightness of a medial or lateral retinaculum which is usually amenable to mobilization and does not require surgical intervention. the is a small but deep muscle' the genuine articularis that controls tension on the joint capsule that when tight can also cause pain under the knee cap. Test the motion of your knee cap in all directions, side to side, up and down in and out, i.e. Distraction. If they are not equal and you cannot stretch them to be symmetric you might benefit from mobilization. If you can establish symmetry on your own more power to you.
