I have been dogged by a intercostal strain for two weeks and while improving, still have some stiffness. I don't have any pain per se and can take deep breaths with no pain. However, I still have weakness and tightness when I turn, utilizing this muscle group.
From what I can determine there appears to be two schools of thought, one, do not return to swimming, golf or other training until there is no sense of stiffness. The other is, get back on the horse and work your way through the stiffness and while sore, keep going. I typically will swim 1 hour every other day and cycle (exercise bike) 13 miles on the other days, golfing on the weekend.
I should tell you I am 54 years old so fast healing is certainly not in my corner.

Nobody has ever said to me in all of my time working as a physio that they feel weakness in their intercostal muscles. Can you explain why you think it's intercostal and not a rib cartilage or oblique muscle strain?
