my boyfriend separated his shoulder last week on monday 2/21. it is exactly a week later. he has been on Vicodin and motrin and it helped at first but not he is complaining that he is in alot more pain. have not noticed a bump only a big yellow bruise below his collarbone.he was seen by an othro and put in a sling and ordered out of work for 3 weeks. is it normal for him to still be in a lot of pain or is something wrong?
he did call his doctor and is waiting to hear back, but in the meantime i thought i would ask others who might have experienced this before and could give us some idea of if its normal or not. is normal for him to be in that much pain?
And what are more options to help keep the pain down?

Yes, it is normal to be in some pain from a grade II shoulder separation. The inflammatory process lasts 3-7 days.
After this time, there should be a reduction in pain at rest/in the sling. If he is still experiencing a noticable amount of pain at rest, he should go in for x-rays to ensure there is no clavicular fracture. I am not sure his mechanism of injury, but a fracture may need to be ruled out.
If he is being an idiot and not wearing the sling or moving the shoulder around into ranges that cause pain, he is asking for it.
I typically see these type of injuries in the sports clinic, so I am not sure why his Dr. does not have him going to rehab?
Hope this helps,
