Lower Spine Hurts for 2 months from Gym Training.

Question: Lower Spine Hurts for 2 months from Gym Training.

Can someone please help me. 2 months back while doing seated barbell shoulder press in gym, felt a little strain at my lower back while pushing through the motion. no pain was notice at the moment. however the next day, there was a sharp pain at my lower back area whenever i bend forward. no pain felt when i bend backwards or to the sides. the pain seems to concentrate only at the end of my lower spine area. sometimes when i sit for 2-3hrs, my right leg seems to get a numb feeling all the way down to my feet. visited TCM and did acupuncture but no help. went for x-ray, no slipped disc or any major problems were noticed. however, the doctor noticed a slight compression of the last section of my spine bone, L5. as in my L5 is slightly smaller in length compared to the other sections in the x-ray. he said i was born with this and there was nothing wrong with it and diagnose it was just a simple back strain. gave me painkillers. but still hurts. one day while i was working, i carried a box of about 20kg and felt the pain again at my back. this time round was worst. the pain kind of radiate down my both feet now. can somebody please help me. i don't know whats wrong with me and i don't know where can i seek help. have stopped gym since 2 months. I'm Singaporean, 18 years old male. any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Answer:

hey pal. i have a lot of gym buddies who are all arms/legs chest, but NO CORE! lack of core strength is commonplace with lower back pain. Try this exercise

^^ with both knees of the floor, increase ur time elevated throughout the days. my first day i lasted 15 seconds in the air, now i can do 3 mins and i have greater core strength than people with raging 6 pak abs. THE KEY to this exercise is to duplicate a flat back.

Here's how.

Lay on back ad place your hand under the arch of ur back. now remove hand. Using ur abdominals, press your core into the earth so that your hand can no longer fit under. CArry that compression into the above mentioned workout. do this exercise until u can reach 2 mins elevated and your core/back strength should strengthen,

that did helped a little buddy. however its still not fully recovered till now. i read about lower back spine pain and i feel that my symptoms are very familiar to Sciatica. could i have a flamed nerve root? and any possible cure for it?

Answer:

I'd recommend asking for a bone scan to rule out Spondylolysis and or spondylolisthesis. My son had the exact same symptoms (the biggest give away for both is pain at the lower back when standing on one leg and leaning back - something he DIDN'T have) and was x-Ray'd and given a CT scan which showed nothing. The pain continued through sports until his leg went numb and finally we went to a specialist in NYC who did a bone scan and determined his L4 vertebra was fractured bilaterally (the "pars defect"). Very common compression factor in weightlifters, football players, gymnasts, etc. but we were to three ortho's - first sait it was a muscle sprain, second said it was sciatica, third said he pulled his hamstring - before it was finally diagnosed and the absolute definitive test is the bone scan. Good luck!
