I am asking this on behalf of my mother. She was recently tripped and landed on her knee. She went to the doctor and was told it was just a mild strain and she would be fine in a few days. It has now been nearly two weeks and she is still limping and has no power in her knee to go up stairs. Also it seems like there is a lack of muscle above the knee that was landed on. I was wondering if anyone has heard of anything at all like this or had an idea what it might be. Is is possible that a partially detached muscle would cause this or would there be constant pain with that. She doesn't really have any pain just mild discomfort. Thank you for your help.

I would imagine it is quite unlikely that part of the Quadriceps muscle has detached, it is more likely that as a result of not using the muscle due to the knee pain, the muscle has reduced in size giving the impression of something being missing. The lack of power could be the result of 2 things: 1. Muscle atrophy (reduction in size and therefore strength) and 2. Pain in the knee can cause inhibition of the surrounding musculature. (Nerves are reluctant to make the muscle work).
Some physio would probably benefit your mother just to gain some range of movement and strength back in the knee. Hope that helps.
