My ankle hurts after running, and more when walking, then goes away.

Question: My ankle hurts after running, and more when walking, then goes away.

Just behind the inner ankle bone, I sometimes get pain near the end of my run. If I stop to walk, it actually hurts more, but after walking a while, it goes away and doesn't return until the next run. The pain goes up the side of my leg about 5 inches or so above the ankle bone. How to I stretch or stop this from continuing?

Answer:

1. You may have the wrong shoe, i.e., a shoe that helps supinators but you may be a pronator
2. Your shoe is worn out (older than a few months or more than 500 miles on it, remember walking and age of the shoe factor in. The cushion deteriorates over time)
3. You might need a prosthetic. When I don't wear my prosthetics, I get ankle pain in the region you mention
4. If you had severe ankle sprains, you can have an impingement from scar tissue on the front outside of the ankle

Bottom line is that a Foot and ankle practitioner will be able to diagnose the problem.
