A 15 year old girl who suffers pain in the lower ribs area on breathing in when swimming training and competeing at club level. She also plays netbal and athletics but does not get pain during these activities. The pain is described as sharp stabbing pain which last during the breath in. She can relieve the pain by stretching the rib cage and relaxing for a time, which then allows her to return to training.
Does anyone have any idea of a cause and any possible treatment.

In my opinion, if there is only pain while swimming and no other activities, and its a sharp pain when inhaling, without being able to take a look at it in person. As of now i would recommend some strengthening programs for your abdominals (primarily transverse abdominis, since they assist primarily in breathing) and your seratus anterior musculuture. Excercises and programs can be found online probably, make sure though that during these excercises if pain consists, stop immediately and modify. first with decreased range of motion, if pain consists, try less weight or force being placed, and if it STILL occurs, try something else. Pain is bad and the last thing you need to worry about in a swim race, is your how your breathing is hurting. Also i recommend stretching, since you stated stetching chest relieves pain temporarily, stretch before and after.
GOOD LUCK
