Running a Marathon again after Rhabdo

Question: Running a Marathon again after Rhabdo

Hey there folks: I live in Guatemala City, and was recently hospitalized for 4 days under IV conditions, after not completing a Half Ironman in Hot and Humid Weather conditions.

Apparent diagnosis indicated confirmed acute renal failure, due to dehydration. I was never under intensive care.

I am an experimented triathlete ( 3 Ironman finishes ) and I´m sure I ingested enough liquids before and during the event. I also took a more than usual dosis of salt tablets, Perpetum, Gels, and Accelerade Electrolytes...

I had a full recovery, and I am starting to run lightly again after 5 weeks of rest, with no apparent medical problems.

Doctors have not been able to diagnose exactly why this happened to me. Some say this happens every now and then, and some other say I experienced an intoxication of some sort. I trained on the heat for 5 straight weeks, with an average volume of 10 hours a week, so I don´t believe that training or fitness had anything to do. There is one Dr. who insists I experienced a specific degree of Rhabdo.

What really troubles me today is the fact that the doctors are prohibiting me to ever compete again in triathlons, and other endurance events.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks a lot in advance!!!

Steven-

I had this exact problem in the New York Marathon. I was hospitalized 4 days with renal failure. I was specifically tested for rhabdomyolysis and did not have it. I was in shape, had ingested fluids as well, and no cause was ever found. The only thing I can think of was I had run another marathon 4 weeks earlier. My renal function returned to normal and I ran 2 subsequent marathons without problems. I would take a good rest and resume training. It probably won't happen again.

Mentally, I think we have changed forever though... You must have had a serious scare too... I am hydrating more than ever ofcourse...

I wish you luck and take good care!!!!
