shooting pain down the lower left leg standing and sitting

Question: shooting pain down the lower left leg standing and sitting

I have been severly incapacitated by a shooting pain in my lower left leg from the outside knee down into the side shin and calf muscles. I get this pain on standing and sitting and the only comfortable position seems to be lying on my side. I think the problem may originate in the lumbar spine (L5) and the left hand side of my lower back is tender but not really painful. One candidate for this may be carrying a heavy mountain bike up the stairs in my right hand repetitively over several years. Any views/suggestions/therapies
