should i go for another ACL surgery if the first one falied?

Question: should i go for another ACL surgery if the first one falied?

Dear DOc,

- 2001 I ruptured my ACL in a ski accident. I had a surgery a few weeks later using the Keneth Jones procedure. No meniscus tears were reported damaged back then.

- November 2008: while playing tennis i was diagnosed with a meniscus flap in the upper meniscus. I had surgery and cut off the torn meniscus piece. My doctor, who had previously conducted my ACL in 2001, was worried that my ACL may be becoming loose. during my surgery he tested with a hook my ACL and reported that it was at 80 percent strong..

- December 27, 2009: I had well recovered from my second surgery and continued playing tennis aggressively. Few months ago I felt a crack in my knew and was diagnosed with a "bucket meniscus tear". My same surgeon was getting worried that it was due to weakness of ACL. Anyways we agreed to go thru surgery and fix the "bucket tear" that was causing my knee to lock...

- My question is:

My doctor is advising me to go thru reconstructive ACL surgery with cadaver graft. I am 37 years old today. Tennis is very important for my quality of life. But having had 3 knee procedures so far, is it advisable? Doctor says my cartilage is good to handle..

pls advise..best regards

Answer:

I think no one can offer you a better advice then your doctor. The orthopod will know the best course of action for you. You might want to seek second opinion if you are unsure. I am assuming that you will pursue tennis/sports after this surgery which will expose you to risk of further damage of ACL if you do not do it now. Its matter of personal preference. You can elect to get a fancy brace which can slightly statistically protect/stabilize your knee. But by far your muscles surrounding your knee are the best protection.
