upper hamstring/glutes alters gait during run

Question: upper hamstring/glutes alters gait during run

During training runs over 10K I can feel my left upper hamstring/buttock tighten(no pain)causing my left side/hip to slumber(not firing). This affects my gait/left foot plant(no push off) and slowing my pace. So I pull to the side of the road, stretch my left hamstring for 20-25 seconds and then finish up the last 5K with my normal gait and foot strike. It feels like a run is suppose to feel! What can I do to prevent these interruptions in training to have to stretch my hamstrings.

Answer:

Mate this could be due to a number of reasons but the most common one is a weak core on the same side. Your deeper gluteal stabilisers may not be firing to begin with so your hamstrings might have to be working overtime to get the same amount of hip extension when you plant your foot. You may have weak gluteals in general on that side.

This problem may also be related to stiffness in your hips/thoracic spine and/or tightness in your hip flexors.

Another problem could be related to the amount of pelvic tilting you have on one side. You'll need an experienced clinician to identify the issue here.

Thanks for responding. I also had strained my biceps femoris high up by the glutes back in July '06 so I think the scarring on those tendons has weakened my hamstring somewhat.

Answer:

Yer mate that cannot be discounted but if your problem is reoccuring and is bilateral, you'll probably have a core deficit. Get it check out.
