Weak thumb

Question: Weak thumb

I went to ski trip for a week in august last year.

Since then, i think my thumb became weaker
(holding the ski poles too tight)

I wasn't able to move my thumb properly for few days but then

it got better so i didn't go and see the doctor.

But now, my thumb feels weaker and when i move my thumb side to side,

i can feel a bone moving but with no pain.

The other thumb doesn't do that but my right thumb, when ever

i move my thumb, there this funny bone moving side to side.

Should i go and see the doctor?

Answer:

Hi there

i am an Australian Kinesiologist/sports therapist

I think you have damaged 2 muscles, the first one being the extensor pollicis longus which runs from the ulna (lower arm bone) to the tip of the thumb under the nail, this muscle extends (straightens) the thumb, and the other is the Lumbrical, a flexor (bends) and it is indeed the tight grip for too long that caused the problem.
The extensor pollicus longus works on the heart meridian and the lumbricals on the Spleen meridian.
This meridian energy is continual and flows from Stomach to Spleen to heart to small intestine, and so on.
The main problem seems to be the spine, T 2-3, upper back. You might not feel this but you might be lacking in energy. Massaging between the 2nd and 3rd rib, next to the sternum (breastbone) will be beneficial although painful. Do this on the hour for 30 seconds for a couple of days on the affected side only. If you have a friend get him/her to massage the point next to the spine about level with the top of the shoulder blade. This is called a ganglia and this is where the nerve controlling those muscles exits. Working on this point will strenghten the muscles involved.
I recommend you see a chiropractor trained in Applied Kinesiology (AK)to have this upper back misalignment adjusted. I feel this is an older type injury which occurred about three years ago. It should not take more than one treatment.
Don't go and see a doctor! They don't see any further than the symptoms.
You need to address the causes.

Good luck
