What can I do for knee pain (patella tendon)?

Question: What can I do for knee pain (patella tendon)?

My 14 yr old son is having some really bad knee pain and it seems to be his patella tendon. He had it really bad while playing basketball over the summer. After taking a few weeks off, he transitioned into football and no problems all season. Now, 3-4 weeks into basketball season the pain has returned.

Answer:

Maybe first try to seek doctors opinion on this. By any stretch I am not a doctor but I had similar problems. I am assuming that the pain is around the knee cap. If so I would urge you to try hamstring stretches, stretching/strengthening exercises for iliotibial band (example link is listed below) and quad stretches. These might alleviate some pain in addition to taking some anti-inflammatories. The pain will not subside overnight but over a period of time it should help.
